Suzanne Craig has joined the Top 60 firm’s Steyning office from Knill James where she worked for 22 years, developing a large client base across the Sussex and South East business community, including a large number of farms and vineyards.
Originally from Lewes, Suzanne is passionate about the countryside and has a family history of farming. Following university she joined Knill James as a trainee, ending up as a partner while specializing in the agricultural sector.
Suzanne believes that today’s farmers and other owner-managed businesses require much more than simply compliance-based services, as she explains:
I see my role as being an adviser and mentor as well as an accountant, and given the huge challenges of today’s business climate – not least Brexit – there is an important hand-holding element to what I do. It is very rewarding when a client regards you not only as their accountant but a valued part of their business.
And she feels that there is a greater need than ever before for such support and guidance: ‘Brexit is a significant challenge for many farmers and viticulturalists. Subsidies are likely to be reduced, so they must continue to explore and act upon commercial alternatives.
Often there are operational efficiencies that can be made, eg reinvestment in machinery, freeing up labour time to progress other revenue making opportunities, at the same time as minimising costs. We can help with creative and workable solutions as well as advise on tax implications, better use of digital software, commerce, budgeting and forecasting and funding.
I am very excited to be part of taylorcocks and in helping to consolidate its reputation as a centre of excellence for farming, viticulture and associated areas such as brewing, providing the highest level of advice and support.
